We are witnessing a tremendous hype on the Internet of Things paradigm, with not only research projects, but also commercial products claiming to implement its fundamental mechanisms. Smart-connected-objects designers often have to face decisions on the global architecture of the service, since no single solution is valid for all the cases. In this paper, we explore the different criteria for designing architectures for Internet of Things solutions, along with illustrative examples of prototypes that implement these approaches.

This paper describes an AAL-enabling platform which combines OSGi middleware, interactive TV, RFID and NFC in order to ease the day to day of not only dependant or semi-dependant elderly people (its main focus) but also their care takers and relatives. The end result is an affordable, unobtrusive, evolvable, usable and easily deployable ICT infrastructure which aims to approach the vision of "AAL for All".

The success of mobile location-based services depends considerably on the underlying location determination system. In fact, the localisation of mobile devices can be achieved through a multitude of location detection methods, from GPS to cell triangulation. We present a location management system, which integrates these heterogeneous location capture methods into one consistent, homogeneous, semantic location model. The notion of a MUGGES Location integrates physical, symbolic, and semantic features of locations. This ensures a consistent location model in which users can cooperate under sophisticated location-aware restrictions. We resemble the semantics of MUGGES Locations in different ontologies to account for different aspects of location relations. Such ontologies can be used to infer relations about MUGGES Locations and to support filtering and searching of relevant location-based services in a mobile environment. We will evaluate this location model in the MUGGES project, which aims at providing an infrastructure for peer-to-peer mobile user-created micro-services.

In the Internet of Things several objects with network capabilities are connected over a self-configured local network with other objects to interact and share knowledge. In this context, the Triple Space approach, where different processes share common semantic knowledge, seems to fit perfectly. In this paper we present our progress towards a semantic middleware which allows the communication between a wide range of embedded devices in a distributed, decoupled and very expressive manner.

Remote laboratories are the natural solution in order to perform real experimentation under e-learning tools. Nevertheless these tools are the result of the research developed by the universities to cover their own needs without having in consideration the deployment of this technology by other institutions. This paper presents a hw prototype for a Remote Lab for microcontrollers that tries to solve these problems contributing new possibilities from the commercial and professional point of view.

The present work describes the implementation of a new remote lab, SecondLab, that allows students to control a microbot from Second Life. SecondLab works over WebLab- Deusto, the remote lab of the University of Deusto, giving the students the chance to work with real experiments from a social 3D-based immersive environment. This approach places the remote lab closer to the students, trying this way to increase their motivation to study science and engineering.

Remote Labs didactic worth can be very supported using them to solve pressing educational problems. The contrasted lack of interest from young students for Engineering is a growing problem today for the Universities that will affect the global economies in the future. Awakening bachelor’s interest for Science and Engineering is a possible way to restrain this tendency. Since different researches prove that the higher is the sense of presence in the environment the more effective becomes the learning process, using Remote Labs from highly immersive environments can be considered a promising idea. Following this educational aim, the present work covers the technical development of SecondLab, an experimental Remote Lab built over the WebLab-Deusto architecture and the popular 3D-based virtual environment Second Life.

Javier García-Zubia, Unai Hernández, Ignacio Angulo, Pablo Orduña, Jaime Irurzun. LXI technologies for remote labs: an extension of the VISIR project. REV2010. Stockholm, Sweden. 2010.
Several remote labs to support analog circuits are presented in this work. They are analyzed from the software and the hardware point of view. VISIR remote lab is one of these labs. After this analysis, a new VISIR remote lab approach is presented. This extension of the VISIR project is based on LXI technologies with the aim of becoming it in a remote lab easily interchangeable with other instruments. The addition of new components and experiments is also easier and cheaper.
