mRDP: An HTTP-based lightweight semantic discovery protocol

"Discovery is one of the most important activities in ubiquitous and distributed computing, with a plethora of available protocols. Most of these protocols are designed for one concrete purpose: network nodes discovery, service discovery, search of specific information stored through the network, and so forth. Designing a single discovery system able to deal with the particularities of many different information structures and purposes seems not feasible. Moreover, these data structures possess some underlaying meanings and relationships that are usually hidden from traditional discovery protocols that use simple text-based matchmaking. A semantic discovery protocol could solve this problem by taking advantage of semantically annotated data and performing reasoning over the information to obtain additional knowledge that can be crucial in processing the queries. In this paper, we describe the basics of a novel semantic discovery mechanism called mRDP (Multicast Resource Discovery Protocol) built upon HTTP and Semantic Web technology to provide more powerful discovery capabilities."

"A WebLab consists of both, a hardware and software development used as a means to interact with remote experiments, located in a traditional laboratory. Normally, the access to these remote experiments and devices is a web-based application. In this paper it is presented the WebLab-GPIB, developed at University of Deusto, which provides students with an Internet based application through which they can work on GPIB lab exercises without the necessity of physically sharing real equipment. The experience brings out a real solution for the practical problems of scheduling when the same devices are shared among quite a big group of students in the laboratory."

A Semantic Matching Algorithm for Discovery in UDDI

"One of the key objectives of web service technology is to construct processes that enable service providers to interconnect with their clients. The industry has developed the UDDI registry to enable the register of services and to make them available to their users. However, the keyword-based search of UDDI frequently return no results because there is no relation between the concepts used by the providers and those used by the clients. This paper presents an UDDI registry extended with semantic functionality by means of a generic semantic discovery algorithm that is not bound to any specific ontology or concepts from it. It enables to match instances and properties without specifically knowing the ontologies being matched. Furthermore, we present an ontology which represents the information associated with a business entity in UDDI, and which enables users to register and search business information semantically also using the former algorithm."

SoaM: A Web-powered Architecture for Designing and Deploying Pervasive Semantic Devices

"Despite several efforts during the last years, the web model and semantic web technologies have not yet been successfully applied to empower Ubiquitous Computing architectures in order to create knowledge-rich environments populated by interconnected smart devices. In this paper we point out some problems of these previous initiatives and introduce SoaM (Smart Objects Awareness and Adaptation Model), an architecture for designing and seamlessly deploying web-powered context-aware semantic gadgets. Implementation and evaluation details of SoaM are also provided in order to identify future research challenges."

Principles and experiences on creating semantic devices

"Current approaches for designing smart objects are failing to provide suitable mechanisms for autonomous distributed intelligence. The next wave of Ubiquitous Computing architectures must be composed of devices capable of adapting to new unforeseen situations and collaborating to determine and react to users’ needs. We argue that semantic technologies, conveniently scaled to embedded platforms, can provide suitable context representation mechanisms and the level of intelligence required for dealing with everyday situations in resource-limited devices. Semantic devices are able to collaboratively interpret context information and choreographically react to situations that were not considered at the moment of design. Their novel future-proof nature along with their socializing capabilities determines a new exciting approach for deploying Ubiquitous Computing scenarios."

A Context-Aware Mobile Mash-up Plaftorm for Ubiquitous Web

Context-aware systems allow users to access services and multimedia data according to their current context (location, identity, preferences). We deem that applying Web 2.0 and Ubiquitous Web concepts as guiding principles to design middleware infrastructure may ease the development and deployment of context-aware systems and, so, result in a wider adoption of intelligent environments. Our work combines social context-aware annotation of objects and spatial regions with sentient mobile devices in order to enable advanced context-aware data and service discovery, filtering and consumption for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Context-aware systems allow users to access services and multimedia data according to their current context (location, identity, preferences). Web 2.0 fosters user contribution and presents the web as an application programming platform where third parties can create new applications (mash-ups) mixing the functionality offered by others. We deem that applying Web 2.0 principles to the development of middleware support for context-aware systems could result into a wider adoption of AmI. This work provides a platform which combines social context-aware annotation of objects and spatial regions with sentient mobile devices enabling multi-modal human to environment interaction in order to enable advanced context-aware data and service discovery, filtering and consumption within both indoor and outdoor environments.

A Generic Matching Algorithm for Semantic Discovery

"This paper presents a generic semantic discovery al- gorithm, based in OWL, for UDDI registries that is not bound to any specific ontology or concepts from it. It enables to match instances and properties without spe- cifically knowing the ontologies being matched and it enables to use all concepts contained in the request resulting in a matching closer to the user needs. Also, the generality of the proposed algorithm enables to change the ontology being used to describe an element in the registry without needing to modify the algorithm and therefore, it enables to use other OWL ontologies to describe the information stored in the registry."
