A week of engineering and technology exhibition was hosted in University of Deusto last month, from 12th untill 19th. During the event many innovative prototypes and product samples were presented by the participant companies and research entities. The event was visited by students, professors, entrepreneurs, researchers and by the general public.
The exhibition was stuffed by modern and classical technologies, innovative products and futuristic equipments. An electronic car, a wireless glove, a smart clock and a robotic arm were just a few of the successes of the event. In one small stand there was a 3D printer quietly building a CAD model layer-by-layer, from bottom to up. The passing by visitors were amazed by the simplicity yet effective way of transforming a 3D computer model to a physical object. Today’s technological trends are the rapid prototyping machines, the 3D printers, and in the nearest future they can change our world. With these printers in mind the Third Industrial Revolution isn’t so far behind.
What kind of new technologies and surprises can bring the second edition of ForoTech in 2014? We’ll have to wait and see.

MORElab members Federico Castanedo and Bernhard Klein, attended the AAL Call 5 SONOPA project kick-off meeting on 2nd and 3rd of May in Ghent, Belgium. The project, which involves 10 partners from 7 countries among 3 years, aims to employ a set of available ICT technologies to develop an end-to-end solution for stimulating and supporting activities at home. The idea of this project is to develop an easy-to-use social network for elderly people that stimulates, encourages, arranges and promotes Activities of Daily Living. SONOPA will employ data analysis techniques to derive a model for the wellness of the user. This model will enable the system to track variations in the daily activities over time in order to detect the right time to provide a recommendation.

MORElab (DeustoTech-Internet) takes part in this project led by ESLE (Asociación de Empresas de Software Libre de Euskadi - Association of Open Source Companies at the Basque Country). This initiative tries to take advantage of new business models and opportunities that Open Source projects can offer, including their internationalization to maximize their visibility, thanks to a cost reduction in developments and more flexibility versus propietary solutions (the code is open and can be improved or changed as needed to create updates or new tools).
Recently, basque public administration has released their applications at OpenApps, so this Open Source directory can be a good data source to populate the metada model about Open Source companies, projects and products behind the SourcePlanet aggregation platform, where other modules will consume this Linked Open Data to get different evaluations and classifications about previous entities in order to optimize the results of users searches later.
